ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the features of PET-CT manifestation of pancreatic metastasis, and to improve its detection rate. Methods The PET-CT images of 31 cases of clinically diagnosed pancreatic metastases and 26 cases of primary pancreatic cancer were retrospectively evaluated. Two experienced specialists identified the lesion location in fused images. After frame by frame image analysis, the lesions with significantly increased radioactivity uptake were seen as positive, when compared with surrounding normal pancreatic tissue. The outline of regions of interest was drawn along the edge of the lesion shown in PET,and based on a semi-quantitative evaluation, the maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax) was calculated. If SUVmax > 2.5,it was considered as positive. Results Among the 31 cases with pancreatic metastasis,22 cases of lung cancer,2 cases of gastric cancer 2 cases of colon carcinoma,1 case of maxillary sinus carcinoma, thyroid carcinoma, melanoma, renal cell carcinoma or gallbladder carcinoma were identified.Twenty-one cases (67.7%) were single,10 cases (32.3%) were multiple or diffuse lesions.Among the single lesions,7 (33.3%) were located in the pancreatic head and neck,14 in pancreatic body and tail.Among the 26 cases of primary pancreatic carcinoma,18 cases (69.2%) were located in the pancreatic head,8(30.8%) in the pancreatic body and tail. The sites of primary and metastatic pancreatic cancer were significantly different (x2 =6.012,P =0.014).CT scan showed only 17 nodular lesions with relatively low density and less clear boundary.PET images showed lesions in 31 cases of metastatic pancreatic cancer, and the mean SUVmax was 7.42 ± 3.48,which was significantly higher than that in primary pancreatic cancer group (5.39 ± 1.71,F =4.87,P =0.032).In addition,PET-CT identified 30 cases of other organs or lymph node metastasis. Conclusions PET-CT plays an important role in the diagnosis of metastatic pancreatic cancer.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the morbidity of soldiers stationed on an island ,analyze the relationship betweendiseases and the environment, and to provide an effective method for disease prevention and treatment .Method Data ofoutpatients from troops stationed on an island between September 2012 and August 2013 were statistically investigatedaccording to the classification of diseases. The cause of disease was analyzed .In addition,90 soldiers stationed on an islandwere randomly selected to investigate their response to heat and humidity and parts susceptible to skin diseases viaquestionnaires and talks. Results A total of 789 cases of disease were identified, including 226 cases of upper respiratorytract infection,118 cases of orthopedic-related diseases,90 cases of traumatic diseases,88 cases of oral diseases,74 casesof digestive system diseases,62 cases of skin diseases,53 cases of ENT diseases,41 cases of urinary tract infection,and37 cases of anorectal diseases. The top five responses to heat and humidity were sweating, thirst, body fatigue, dizzinessand profuse sweating. The most susceptible part to skin diseases was the feet ,followed by the cheek, crotch, back andneck. Conclusion The epidemiological characteristics of diseases on this island are significant, and medical supportshould be focused on improving the overall level of hospital treatment.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the physical fitness status of stationed on an island and the influence factors of military operational ability in order to take effective intervention measures to cope with the problems encountered by the garrison force. Methods The outdoor environment heat intensity of the island was monitored and evaluated by thermal environment monitors. The physical fitness of thirty-eight soldiers randomly selected was evaluated by measuring VO 2max. Ninety soldiers stationed on this island were selected by random sampling , for whom questionnaires and interviews were designed, involving the influence factors of military operational ability .Results This island was a typical humid-hot environment, with high temperature , high humidity and high radiation .The physical fitness of soldiers declined obviously because of the typical humid-hot environment. The top five working environmental factors were high temperature , humidity, solar radiation, wind and seasonal drying .The top five personal factors were physical fatigue , overtraining, injury, mental fatigue and lack of sleep .Conclusion Considering the obviously decreased physical fitness of soldiers caused by the typical humid-hot environment , how to assess military combat effectiveness and how to determine whether the level of combat effectiveness can meet the actual needs of tropical combat , requires scientific indicators and criteria of evaluation .

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the protective role of Jidesheng Sheyao tablet in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury(ALI) in rats. Methods Fifty male SD rats were randomly divided into 6 groups:normal control group, dexamethasone positive group,LPS model group, Sheyao groups of low, middle and high dosages successively. All rats, except normal control group, were administrated with LPS by intravenous injection to induce acute lung injury. The rats in positive group and three different dosage groups were treated by dexamethasone(3 mg?kg -1, iv), low dosage(0.8 g?kg -1), middle dosage(1.6 g?kg -1) and high dosage(3.2 g?kg -1) of Jidesheng Sheyao tablet(oral) respectively before LPS-induced ALI. Each rat in normal control group received injection of 1ml normal saline. The animals were killed after injection of LPS for 2 hours, and then the lung index was calculated, the histopathology of the lung injury was observed by light microscope, the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) proteins in the lung tissues and their activity in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and the lung homogenates were detected by immunohistochemistry and zymography separately. Results Compared with model group, the lung indexes were significantly decreased in the drug groups(P

ABSTRACT

Objective To introduce a new extracapsular approach for thyroidectomy in patients with surgical thyroid disease. Method Clinical data of 104 cases undergoing this procedure were retrospectively analyzed. Results From May 1990 to May 2000, 104 patients underwent either total or subtotal thyroidectomy by extracapsular approach. One patient suffered from postoperative temporary recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy. No morbidity such as postoperative thyroid crisis, hemorrhage leading to airway compression, permanent hypoparathyroidism nor mortality developed. Conclusion The total extracapsular approach for thyroidectomy is safe, less of complication and effective.

ABSTRACT

AIM:To investigate the relevance between metallothionein(MT) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) expression and activity in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). METHODS: Fifty Kunming male mice, weighing 25 g?5 g, were randomly divided into two groups: experiment group (40 mice) and control group (10 mice). CCl4 was used to induce the hepatic fibrosis model in the experiment group. Conditioned medium of HSCs (containing MMP-2) was added at different concentrations of MT, then MMP-2 activity was detected. Liver tissue microarray was used. Collagen fibers was detected by Sirius red staining. The expressions of MMP-2 and MT proteins in liver tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry staining. Gel zymography was used to confirm the activity of MMP-2 in liver tissue homogenate and in the conditioned medium. RESULTS: The expressions of both MMP-2 and MT proteins in liver tissues increased fluctuating with the process of fibrogenesis in the model mice alternately, but the proteins showed out of phase changes. The activity of MMP-2 in the liver tissues also increased gradually and fluctuated with the development of fibrosis. Apart from individual time points, the activity of MMP-2 and MT expression were negatively correlated. The activity of MMP-2 in the conditioned medium treated by MT declined in a dose-dependent manner (r=-0.9990, P
